It has been suggested that the Christine Collister Discussion Group should migrate to Yahoo boards. One of the big benefits of such a move would be that you could request the option of receiving any posts directly into your email box. So, no surfing to a web-based discussion board unless you wanted to. Your posts could also be made directly from your email box.
What experiences do you have of Yahoo boards? Good and bad? Please share your opinions (democracy at work here )

My two pennorth fwiw
Is it possible to elaborate on the reasons for a move to Yahoo? like, is it a cost thing?
I know these things don't pay for themselves, unless of course the advertising is covering it... and even then I believe that you need people to click on the adverts now and then to get the count up (something which I had thought of suggesting some time back, that we do a little clicking now and then).
I used to use the Patty Griffin Yahoo board now and then but found it a bit sterile (don't know how else to explain it).
The concept of getting your alerts/messages via email, rather than visiting the board, doesn't really seem to benefit the group to me and may even discourage some from popping in and having a look at what's going on.
Having said all that, I'm not worried which way it goes, as long as I can keep in touch with some of the nice people I've met here.
I'll be interested to hear other views on this and hope that as many people as possible contribute.

I don't have any problem with Yahoo! boards on the whole. I belong to a few of them, and get email notification, which you can opt out of if you don't want the emails. (I quite like the emails because they come to me, rather than me having to remember to go to the boards to see what's happening. OK, occasionally you can get flooded with a load of OT rubbish mail but it's easy to skim over that and hit the Delete key.)
I used to hate Yahoo! because of its unreliability but lately it's improved, IME.
Summing up: don't mind that much either way, whatever's best for our esteemed moderator. Would it be easier than this one? (Just interested, I'm the moderator for a couple of Yahoo! ones and I don't find it too onerous, but then they're fairly quiet most of the time).
Cheers

I have no experience to contribute. I only belong to one other discussion site, and use that the same way as this one. Same number of members, but around 20 very active ones.
From what you are saying above, I would much prefer to continue to use thuis site the same way as now, rather than receiving posts by e.mail.
But, as mentioned above, as long as I can can keep in touch with the CC discussion board 'family'......

... I was wondering if this topic was to be a debate about Brent Geese, or Arctic Terns ?
Personally, I am all for migrating south for the winter !!
My sisters' place in Dubai would be ideal from November to March !

With Yahoo! groups you can login and see/join in the discussions without receiving email, or you can opt to receive messages by email. You can then reply by email without having to go to the Yahoo! groups and log in - the choice is yours. Yahoo! groups also allow you to share photos and files, etc., and can be fully moderated or unmoderated, etc.
As I said, I don't feel strongly either way, but I'm just replying to your point about email.
Cheers

I've just navigated myself back to the Patty Griffin Yahoo group I once used and my answer to the question first posed in this thread would be a resounding NOooooooOOOoooOOo!
Full of spam posts... just horrible
But that's still jmho

The spamming can be controlled by the moderator. It's possible to moderate every post, or what I do on the ones I moderate is allow "trusted" people who have proven themselves genuine members of the group to post unmoderated (you can decide to moderate or not on a per-member basis). Of course it doesn't stop your trusted members from spamming if they really wanted to - but then I could delete the spam and kick them out!
As long as the group is moderated properly there should be no real problem with spam.
Cheers

I don't really like Yahoo. It seems such a mess to navigate in. I don't like the white background.
However, there are advantages such as posting pictures and links etc.
I would rather the message board remain independent, but would also fully support a move to Yahoo.

Hello
I'm not here much, but here's tuppence worth anyhow.
I don't think there's anything wrong with this one!
I am not a big fan of Yahoo boards, in fact the ones I'm subscribed to I stopped using as I can't bear the ad clicking you have to do.
I like BB style boards a lot, I have a free one (from freeBB.com) for the Oxford Folk Festival (it's very pink, http://17.freebb.com/oxfordfolkfest/, but that's not compulsary!). It doesn't offer all the functionality you get from coughing up for something of course, and you have ads appearing at the bottom of posts (though nothing too huge and in yer face!). On the whole I find it very nice to use.
Whatever you do don't get a free aimoo one, they have the most intrusive floating and invasive pseudo-posting type ads I ever came across <grrrr> !
Cheers
