Well!
It's been mighty quiet here and I suppose I share some of the blame for not posting my usual drivel. However... I thought Christine's recent tour might have provoked a little more discussion.. maybe we're all still reeling from the shock of seeing her again after all this time
Anyway... I thought I'd ask, who purchased the exclusive CD at one of her shows and what they thought.
I know some will think I'm biased because of the inclusion of the studio demo of 'Mary' but that apart... I have to declare that I think it's bloody fantastic! I'll try to be honest yet tactfull at the same time here and say that I hadn't been gripped by Chris's more recent studio releases the same as I was by 'An equal love' and 'Songbird' but to me this is Christine back at the top of her game with excellent covers and more importantly, very fine new material of her own
The cover of Jackson Browne's 'For a dancer' and 'We spoke today' on the disc are so moving. In fact I have a bit of a song crush on the latter... finding myself hitting the replay button repeatedly and getting more and more tearfull with each play.
I don't know how much input that Christine's new cohort Chris Rob Cross had in the arrangements of the new material but whatever... it was great to see Christine accompanied on stage by him and I thought he was a very solid and welcome addition to the CC experience ... I hope he's going to be around again come the next tour (which hadn't better be as long this time or someone might end up getting their wrists slapped)
I sincerely hope everyone here got a copy of this CD and worry a bit that some of the faithful (like Dylan) might not have got to bag a copy if they couldn't make one of the shows.
As an aside, I heard a whisper from some guy at CC's show that Back Door Slam might be appearing on these shores sometime this autumn. I hope those ITK keep us informed as I would really like to be there when they do.
OK.... Over to you guys....
a more eloquent critique than mine please?
| I'm waiting, to hear your voice again..... and lighten up this heart I'm holding on to stupid memories but I see you in every little thing

Well, Potter, I don't really do eloquent
But I do agree with you about the tour. It was not just that we hadn't seen a CC-type tour for such a long time either - the new songs are REALLY strong and the Under Construction CD was an excellent accompaniment to the tour.
I may have said it before, but I think that for the true fans it's perfect, because you get to hear new songs in the form they first hit your ears on tour. Then (hopefully) they appear later on a studio CD, having evolved on the road, maybe into something bigger and better, or maybe exactly as we first heard them.
I personally think that 'We Spoke Today' could not be bettered by embellishment - its plaintive simplicity matches the lyrics perfectly: one of CC's best songs EVER. And all the new songs, I agree, were very strong indeed. I was lucky enough to get to three gigs and they grew on me with each hearing. We need input from ChrisH as he was the undisputed king of the Tour (was it six shows Chris?).
Much of the impact was due to the excellent sound at the gigs and the huge contribution of Rob Cross. When it's just Christine solo with guitar I sometimes think the guitar gets in between the emotion of her songs and the audience. In the few where she put down her own guitar and let Rob do the fretting, I thought she really took flight!
And Rob's use of his new box of tricks was a really positive addition to the sound. Such gizmos can be overdone and can interfere with the music, but I thought it complemented the songs really well, especially on 'All About Love' and 'Mary' which took off and flew into a wholly new dimension.
I don't know how long we'll have to wait for more live shows over here, nor how long a studio CD might take to be born, but Under Construction will do quite nicely in the meantime

Bob Harris played Back Door Slam on his Saturday night show a couple of weeks ago ..... bought a copy of the new CD on the strength of that. Posted to me a couple of days ago ..... now stuck in postal strike
